Elkins Park Station

EMS Station 382

In the 1980's When the call volume in Abington Township reached a critical plateau, Second Alarmers began a "Substation", which was the first of it's kind in this county.  Stationed at the Rockledge Fire Company's Firehouse, a BLS unit handled emergencies in the "Lower East Side" of Abington Township, the Borough of Jenkintown and the Borough of Rockledge, during weekday hours.  after several years and a successful response time decrease, Second Alarmers began a full-time station, which was designated "353A" by the county and given the operational title of "Battalion 2".    This station was the former McKinley Fire Company's headquarters (Company 200) and began a unique program of volunteer "Residents".  Paramedic and EMT volunteers of Second Alarmers were eligible to reside in one of 7 apartments constructed at the Battalion 2 station, rent-free, as long as they handled overnight duty.  The 7 residents split up the entire month and provided volunteer EMS service to the citizens.    Career crews were assigned to this station during the day shifts and operated in conjunction with volunteers in the early evenings.

The building, located at 876 Jenkintown Rd, in Elkins Park, was showing it's age and needed replacement.  During the contruction, station 353A was temporarily housed at our neighbor's "home", the McKinley Fire Company, which is located across the street from Battalion 2'. The fire company invited us in during our rebuilding and we thank them for their hospitality.   The new building was commissioned in 2006.

By Order of the Board of Directors, the new building has been officially named the "Fred Trasatti  Station" for his work on the project above and beyond the call.
